Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Students can register for the IELTS test online, here's how: 

  • Log on to our IELTS India website
  • Select your preferred test – computer-delivered IELTS/ paper-based (IELTS, IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills).
  • Select your test type/module – Academic or General Training for IELTS, IELTS for UKVI, A1 and B1 for Life Skills (be extremely careful while choosing the module you wish to take).
  • Pick your desired test location/city (from the available IELTS test centres in India).
  • Once done, you will find a list of dates available for your preferences. Select your desired date and time slot.
  • Fill up the required details and complete your online application. Remember, you will also have to upload a clear, scanned colour copy of your passport to complete the process.
  • Proceed to pay the test fee.

 

Once your test date is booked, you will receive an acknowledgment on your registered email/phone number. For the Speaking test, you can book a slot online on your preferred date and time (Only applicable for Paper based IELTS). If you fail to choose a slot within the stated time period, a time slot will be automatically allocated to you.

The IELTS test results are valid for 2 years from the date of issue of the test result. The IELTS system automatically deactivates the test result when it reaches its 2nd year.

The IELTS test fee in India differs as per the test type. Please see below

  • IELTS (Computer Delivered test) - Rs 16,250/- 
  • IELTS (Pen & Paper Test) - Rs 16,250/- 
  • IELTS (For UK visa & immigration) - Rs 16,500/- 

IELTS band scores are reported on a 9-band scale ranging from band 1 to band 9. Each part of the test is awarded a band score for performance. The Listening and Reading parts of the IELTS test are marked in a different way to the Speaking and Writing tests.

In the Listening and Reading test parts, each have 40 questions and each correct answer receives 1 mark. The total score out of 40 is converted to the IELTS 9-band scale.

IELTS Speaking test is evaluated by certified IELTS examiners in a face-to-face interview using a set of assessment criteria to award band scores for each of the four criteria, fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy and pronunciation.

IELTS Writing test is evaluated in the same way with the examiner awarding band scores for each of the four criteria that best match the performance at each band level for Writing Task 1 and Writing Task 2.

  • If you have taken IELTS on paper, you will receive the test score with in 13 days after the test date. 
  • If you have taken IELTS on computer, you will receive your results electronically in 3-5 days after your test. 

The Listning test will be first, folowed by Reading and Writing tests (Note: there are no breaks between the tests). The speaking test will be held either on the same day or seven days before or 2 days after the main test, depending on local arrangement 

IELTS Academic: This test is for studenrts who are planning to study in an English-speaking country. The academic test assesses students on their eligibility to begin studying in English. It features vocabulary that is familiar within an academic setting. ThiIELTS Academic can also be taken for professional registration purposes.

IELTS General: The IELTS General Training test is suitable for those wishing to migrate to an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, UK). The test assesses everyday English language skills that a person will need in social situations and in workplace environments.
